Available VMware View 4
After the announced vetoes of Citrix XenDesktop 4.0 (although still always RC) VMware also pulls out his rabbit of the hat: VMware View 4.0, a new major release of VMware's desktop virtualization product.
I did not understand even if the product is actually available now, yet I could not download the evaluation problems for the registration form.
Let us see some of the new features (taken and translated from the VMware site):
The desktop application virtualization breaks the bonds between software, hardware and operating systems, eliminating the need to install or manage desktop environments on end-user devices. From a central location you can manage and update all Windows desktops and applications within minutes. VMware View makes testing, provisioning and application support and desktop much easier.
Through 4 View Manager, VMware View provides a unique tool for managing new desktop or groups of desktops and a simple interface for setting policy. Using a template, you can customize the pool of virtual desktops and set access policies.
Based on Linked Clone technology, Composer allows the rapid creation of desktop images from a master image.
The new VMware View PCoIP transport protocol of the desktop provides a better desktop experience for end users, even if WAN connections with high latency. VMware View gives users access to their virtual desktop on a wide range of devices, without performance degradation, at any time.
VMware View offers high availability with no single point of failure. VMware High Availability (HA) provides automatic failover and provides protection in the 'virtualized desktop environment, without the cost or complexity of traditional clustering solutions.
VMware ThinApp separates applications from operating systems for greater compatibility and simplifying management.
Offline Desktop, an experimental feature in VMware View 4, increases productivity, allowing you to run deksktop local or virtual desktops from the data center through the management of the administrative console.
Reduce cost and complexity of migration by providing desktop Windows 7 as a virtual desktop.
VMware View supports a wide range of thin client devices. For a complete list, see Thin Client Compatibility Guide HCL.
