VMware ha reso disponibile da qualche giorno la nuova versione gratuita del proprio Type 2 hypervisor  di virtualizzazione, VMware Player 4.

Ricordo che con VMware Player è possibile creare e eseguire Virtual Machine VMware (le prime versioni non permettevano la creazione di Virtual Machine ma solamente la loro esecuzione)

Finalmente è uscita la major update del prodotto di virtualizzazione per desktop di Oracle, VirtualBox 3.2.

Nella nuova release troviamo nuove funzionalità e bugfix che affliggevano la precedente versione.

Da adesso VirtualBox prende ufficialmente  il nome di Oracle VM VirtualBox (come saprete SUN è stata acquisita da Oracle il 20 aprile 2009)

Vediamo cosa c’è di nuovo (changelog):

• Experimental support for Mac OS X guests
• Memory ballooning to dynamically in- or decrease the amount of RAM used by a VM (64-bit hosts only)
• Page Fusion automatically de-duplicates RAM when running similar VMs thereby increasing capacity. Currently supported for Windows guests on 64-bit hosts
• CPU hot-plugging for Linux (hot-add and hot-remove) and certain Windows guests (hot-add only)
• New Hypervisor features: with both VT-x/AMD-V on 64-bit hosts, using large pages can improve performance; also, on VT-x, unrestricted guest execution is now supported (if nested paging is enabled with VT-x, real mode and protected mode without paging code runs faster, which mainly speeds up guest OS booting)
• Support for deleting snapshots while the VM is running
• Support for multi-monitor guest setups in the GUI for Windows guests
• USB tablet/keyboard emulation for improved user experience if no Guest Additions are available
• LsiLogic SAS controller emulation
• RDP video acceleration
• NAT engine configuration via API and VBoxManage
• Use of host I/O cache is now configurable
• Guest Additions: added support for executing guest applications from the host system (replaces the automatic system presimparation feature)
• OVF: enhanced OVF support with custom namespace to preserve settings that are not part of the base OVF standard

Continuano gli aggiornamenti per il prodotto di Virtualizzazione Desktop di Oracle che arriva alla versione 3.1.6 (data di rilascio 25 Marzo 2010)

Essendo una maintenance release, troveremo solamente risoluzione di problematiche della precedente release (bugfix) e  supporto a nuovi sistemi operativi:

• Linux hosts: fixed timing issue on hosts with Linux kernels 2.6.31 or later with certain CPUs (asynchronous timer mode; bug #6250)
• Linux hosts: properly handle host suspend/resume events on Linux kernels 2.6.30 or later (bug #5562)
• Mac OS X hosts: fixed VBoxSVC crash while enumerating the host network interfaces under certain circumstances
• Snapshots: fixed image corruption after snapshot merge under certain circumstances (bug #6023)
• Snapshots: fixed crash with VBoxHeadless / OSE
• VMM: fixed reference counting guru meditation (bug #4940)

Altro aggiornamento per il prodotto Citrix Segure Gateway, che arriva alla versione 3.1.3. Come detto in altri post, lo sviluppo del prodotto è fermo (la release 3 è l’ultima sviluppata) per dare spazio alla piattaforma Access Gateway, è comunque garantito il supporto di aggiornamenti sulla sicurezza e sulla stabilità.

Ho notato presso un mio cliente che i domain controller Windows 2003 Sp2 che avevano attivo il servizio DHCP Server consumavano un quantitativo di ram spropositato per i servizi offerti: su di uno in particolare ho trovato 2,6 GB di Ram in uso, gran parte presi dal processo TCPSVCS.exe.

Cercando un po’ di informazioni sui vari forum di supporto ho trovato un articolo di un presunto memory leak causato dall’aggiornamento dinamico dei record DNS, attivo di default sul servizio DHCP Server di Windows Server 2003.
