Durante il keynote Synergy 2010 a San Francisco, Citrix ha presentato pubblicamente la versione 5.6 del suo Hypervisor XenServer: in questa nuova release oltre a nuove funzionalità troviamo anche un cambio nel licensing molto importante.

Fin dalla sua nascita XenServer ha subito molte modifiche dal punto di vista commerciale: in un primo momento totalmente a pagamento, poi per contrastare altri hypervisor la enterprise è diventata gratuita ma con alcune features disponibili con tool a pagamento (Citrix Essential for XenServer), ora con la 5.6 troviamo nuove edizioni (il trend di aggiunta delle edizioni sembra molto vicino a quello degli altri competitors).

Se ne parlava da tempo e finalmente Citrix ha presentato oggi al Synergy di San Francisco (il keynote mondiale per gli addetti al settore) il nuovo hypervisor bare-metal per i notebook: XenClient

E’ così iniziata la vera rivoluzione che porta avanti di un ulteriore step il concetto che abbiamo avuto fino ad oggi di Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI).

Un altro Tool Gratuito rilasciato da VKernel che volevo segnalare è AppVIEW: questo semplice strumento permette agli amministratori di sistema di tenere sotto monitoraggio visivo le 5 virtual machine più importanti dell’infrastruttura virtuale VMware.

Oltre al monitoraggio in tempo reale, AppVIEW tiene traccia dello storico fino 30 giorni di CPU, memoria, disco e storage.

E’ stata rilasciata la nuova release di VirtualBox 3.2.0 in Beta1: chiaramente non è una versione da utilizzare in produzione ma per chi vuol testare le novità può eseguire una nuova installazione su Linux, Windows e Mac OS X.

Vediamo insieme cosa c’è di nuovo:

• Following the acquisition of Sun Microsystems by Oracle Corporation, the product is now called Oracle VM VirtualBox and all references were changed without impacting compatibility.
• Experimental support for Mac OS X guests
• Memory ballooning to dynamically in- or decrease the amount of RAM used by a VM (64-bit hosts only) (see the manual for more information)
• CPU hot-plugging for Linux (hot-add and hot-remove) and certain Windows guests (hot-add only) (see the manual for more information)
• New Hypervisor features: with both VT-x/AMD-V on 64-bit hosts, using large pages can improve performance (see the manual for more information); also, on VT-x, unrestricted guest execution is now supported (if nested paging is enabled with VT-x, real mode and protected mode without paging code runs faster, which mainly speeds up guest OS booting)
• Support for deleting snapshots while the VM is running
• Support for multi-monitor guest setups in the GUI (see the manual for more information)
• USB tablet/keyboard emulation for improved user experience if no Guest Additions are available
• LsiLogic SAS controller emulation
• RDP video acceleration
• NAT engine configuration via API and VBoxManage

Continuano gli aggiornamenti per il prodotto di Virtualizzazione Desktop di Oracle che arriva alla versione 3.1.6 (data di rilascio 25 Marzo 2010)

Essendo una maintenance release, troveremo solamente risoluzione di problematiche della precedente release (bugfix) e  supporto a nuovi sistemi operativi:

• Linux hosts: fixed timing issue on hosts with Linux kernels 2.6.31 or later with certain CPUs (asynchronous timer mode; bug #6250)
• Linux hosts: properly handle host suspend/resume events on Linux kernels 2.6.30 or later (bug #5562)
• Mac OS X hosts: fixed VBoxSVC crash while enumerating the host network interfaces under certain circumstances
• Snapshots: fixed image corruption after snapshot merge under certain circumstances (bug #6023)
• Snapshots: fixed crash with VBoxHeadless / OSE
• VMM: fixed reference counting guru meditation (bug #4940)

Citrix ha aggiornato un interessante documento dove vengono indicati tutti i passi per convertire una Virtual Machine VMware in una Virtual Machine per XenServer che si rileva molto utile per tutti quelli che hanno in programma la migrazione all’ hypervisor di casa Citrix.

La guida step by step ci aiuta in tutti i passaggi della conversione, utilizzando lo strumento XenConvert 2.0.1 e  il formato di portabilità delle Virtual Machine in standard OVF.

In molti lo stavamo aspettando ,  finalmente è disponibile il Virtual Appliance di Access Gateway, compatibile con l’hypervisor XenServer.

Molte infrastrutture che adottano XenApp o XenDesktop per il delivery centralizzato sia delle applicazioni che dei desktop hanno adottato il modello AccessGateway per garantire l’accesso sicuro agli utenti remoti verso la loro farm.

Interessante documento rilasciato da Citrix, CTX123655, che spiega tutti i passi per creare una Virtual Machine su XenServer 5.5, Windows o Linux, e la corretta procedura per fare P2V da server fisici.

Ultimamente sto avendo problemi con la virtualizzazione sotto Ubuntu Karmic (9.10): nello specifico sul mio notebook una Virtual Machine Windows XP SP3 ha numerosi rallentamenti e veri e propri blocchi di 1-2 secondi costanti ogni 20 secondi.

Leggendo sul forum di supporto ufficiale mi sono reso conto che il problema è comune a molti,  sin dalla versione 3.0.10.

Ho fatto numerosi test per riuscire ad avere un indizio sul problema, l’unica cosa comune a tutti è il file di registro vbox.log che riporta questo errore:

Da qualche giorno è disponibile per il download la prima versione del discusso sistema operativo di Google, Chrome OS, in formato Virtual Machine compatibile con VMware e Virtualbox.

Ho fatto il download del file a questo indirizzo (previa registrazione) ed ho importato il disco vmdk decompresso sulla mia Virtualbox 3.0.12

Cercavo informazioni in merito alla funzionalità  VMotion di VMware in ambienti ESX eterogenei, quindi nella migrazione da ESX 3.5 al nuovo vSphere 4.0 ma con scarsi risultati.

Visto che stavo effettuando una migrazione, ho fatto una prova su strada della cosa…e la risposta è chiaramente SI!

Dopo anni con il nome di Workstation (tratto dall’omonimo software di VMware) oggi prende il nome di Parallels Desktop.
