Molti di voi avranno sicuramente notato il cambio di assegnazione delle licenze nella nuova versione di VMware vSphere 4: se avete avuto modo di gestire e/o installare un’ infrastruttura VMware VI 3/3.5, avrete avuto a che fare con i famosi file .lic! Con la versione 4, VMware ripropone l’ormai consolidato da tutti i vendor product key, da inserire in fase di installazione sui vari server Esx e sul vCenter Server (chiamato in precedenza Virtual Center Server).

Mi sono ritrovato in situazioni in cui non potevo avviare le virtual machine perchè non era on-line o semplicemente irraggiungibile il server di licenze.. quindi questo tipo di errore/problema di “point of failure” ce lo troviamo risolto.

What is the change in the license management in VMware vSphere?

The license management has been simplified starting with VMware vSphere 4. Each VMware vSphere host will be assigned only one license key for the entire “bundle” (e.g. VMware vSphere Enterprise) rather than a separate license for each feature. The same license key can be shared by many VMware vSphere hosts, subject to the key’s maximum CPU count.

How does the new centralized license key management ease license administration?

The new centralized license key management introduces administration of licenses as a native feature starting with VMware vCenter 4, and no separate license server is required to manage and monitor the software. VMware vCenter can be used to assign license keys to VMware vSphere (VMware ESX) hosts via a simple UI. This also enables easy monitoring of license state and compliance.
